One of the questions we are asked most often is why should schemes obtain an assessment of the strength of their selected insurer (or insurers) given they are regulated entities. In our view the main drivers are:
- Trustees and employers may not be familiar with the protections offered by the regulation, or its limitations
- It strengthens trustees’ and employers’ governance processes
- It is in-keeping with the way that other services and advisers are selected
- There is only one opportunity to do it
- It can help demonstrate the decision-making process in case it is later questioned
